Preparing For Your Floral Consultation

Hi all! I get this question all the time: What do I need to know before I reach out to a florist for my wedding or event? When you don't know much about flowers (and truly, you're not alone), it can be super daunting to plan for a floral consultation or know what to expect. Well don't panic, because it's absolutely okay if you don't know your color scheme yet or don't know the names of flowers. The tips below will help you prepare just 3 simple things so you'll feel confident as you search for your perfect florist match!

1. Have your date and location

This is probably one of the first questions your florist will ask to make sure they are available for your date. There's nothing worse than chatting with a florist you really end up loving, but then later realizing they are already booked, so let them know your date first! Having a location booked is important as well. This will inform your florist of any logistical specifics put in place by your venue that may affect the plan for your florals. Every venue has different requirements, which always plays a part in floral design. Also, knowing your venue will allow your florist to get familiar with your space (if they aren't already) so that all the creative ideas can get flowing!

2. Know about how many guests you're expecting

As your florist puts together your quote, they'll need to know about how many guests you expect. This is to account for the number of floral arrangements you'll need. This number doesn't have to be set in stone, but will help give you a better idea of what the overall cost will end up being. Unless you have some serious drops or increases in your guest count, you won't be surprised when you get your final bill.

3. Look up your florist's work ahead of time

If you're like me, you need visuals! Having a few examples in mind of your florist's work that you love will help drive the conversation about what you are drawn to. Plus this helps your florist get a sense of your style. Better yet, you can even refer to specific instagram posts or photos in their portfolio. If you're reaching out to a florist, chances are you already like what you've seen so far, so taking a few extra moments to choose some photos you really like will help you and your florist get on the same page from the beginning.

In short, you're not expected to know everything on your floral consultation call, that's what you're hiring a florist for! They are there to help guide you and make recommendations so that you will have the florals you dream about. The most important thing is to find a florist that you trust and feel comfortable with. Use this consultation to gauge how well you get along too! Remember, they are the experts so you don't have to be :)
